Enterasys Networks has added new Packet-Over-SONET (POS) and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) modules to its X-Pedition ER16 router
The X-Pedition ER16 is a 16 slot, modular Layer 3 core router that provides advanced application services, including traffic prioritisation, traffic shaping, multilayer security, application load balancing, application content verification and high availability. The new modules expand the ER16’s wide area networking (WAN) and optical technology offerings to meet the rising demand for Internet/intranet traffic and multiservice IP-based networks.
SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) is the ANSI standard for synchronous data transmission over optical media, and SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) is the international equivalent of SONET. The POS/SDH standard allows easier connections between carriers using different companies’ products for their optical networks. With these new modules, Enterasys provides organisations with a POS/SDH edge system for connecting their enterprise LAN to high-speed metropolitan and optical carrier networks.
Enterasys will offer four new POS/SDH modules for the ER 16 with a variety of standards-based connectivity options, including: ER16-POS21-04, which provides four OC-3c/STM-1 multimode fibre, MT-RJ interfaces; ER16-POS29-04, which provides four OC-3c/STM-1 single mode-IR, MT-RJ interfaces; ER16-POS31-02, which provides two OC-12c/STM-4 multimode fibre, SC interfaces; and ER16-POS39-02, which provides two OC-12c/STM-4 single mode-IR, SC interfaces.
These new modules complement the X-Pedition’s current technology offerings, including Gigabit Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, ATM/OC-3, WAN (HSSI), WAN (serial) and FDDI.
The new X-Pedition POS/SDH modules enable enterprises to deliver emerging network services with increased bandwidth requirements such as videoconferencing, webcasts, e-commerce, database access and other network-enabled communications.
