After exceeding financial expectations for the third straight quarter this year, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has stated that the company “expect[s] to deliver the most profitable year in our history.”
According to recently released figures, the company earned revenues of $745 million (€526 million) from 1 July to 30 September, exceeding the $600 million (€425 million) the company expected to earn over the quarter. Strong sales for Blizzard’s key franchises World of Warcraft and StarCraft II were cited as major factors in the success alongside the continued success of last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
EA expects profits to be bolstered by next week’s release of Call of Duty: Black Ops – expected to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time and one of the top entertainment properties of 2011.
Next month brings World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. For the entire year of 2010, Activision Blizzard is predicting revenues of $4.28 billion (€3 billion).
In contrast, FInal Fantasy publishers Square Enix reported a 24.8% decline in net sales, and a 56.4% drop in operating income for the same period.
For the second quarter, the company reported net sales of 68.05 billion yen (€60 million), down sharply from 90.56 billion yen (€79 million) from the same period a year ago.
In an earnings release today, the company blamed a “challenging operating environment” for the slowdown of unit sales during the six-month period. It also added that operating income performed slightly better than expected due to “carryover sales of major titles released in March of the previous fiscal year.”
Looking ahead, Square Enix predicts 160 billion yen (€1.4 billion) in net sales, and operating income of €175 million) for the six-month period that ends in March of next year.
