Download digital music on the move

O2 is branching out in the music business with its new digital music player. The DMP uses the O2 network to select, retrieve and store music using their GPRS handset — the first ‘music over mobile’ service in Ireland.

The mobile network’s partners include Warner Music, AIM, Universal and BMG; the labels will provide track listings for new chart releases, which can be downloaded to the music player. Other record companies are expected to sign up in the coming months.

The good news is that Speakeasy customers aren’t being left out the loop — the service is open to all O2 customers. Customers connect the music player to their handset via an Infrared port, and select the ‘get new music’ option to view track listings. You can then select a track and hear a free 30-second clip or buy the track.

Once the track is downloaded, the player is unhooked from the phone and works as a normal music player. The device can store up to 70 tracks on the player, which has a 64MByte capacity; the music can be transferred to a data card and moved to your PC to
free up space for new songs.

As an introductory offer, O2 is offering users 100 tracks of your choice to download; also included in the package is a 64Mbyte and a USB cable. The player costs €299, with tracks about €1.50 each.
