In practical terms, digital transformation is using technology to radically change and improve performance and the reach of the business. It is also complex, involving disruptive technologies and complex surgery around customer experiences, operational processes and business models, Dejan Cušic, Comtrade
Three layers
Fujitsu is also seeing some of its clients being front runners in the Irish market in digital transformation — although it means different things to different people and sectors, says Ronan Coy. “I’m inclined to think of it as three layers. The first and bottom layer is simply digitising existing businesses, the second layer would be transforming the user experience and the top layer is all about re-inventing the business model.
“That business model re-thinking is still the least common, although we have clients who are well started on just that. But in truth, most activity so far is in digitising the existing business, essentially to begin transforming the user experience. They all understand that there is a long way to go but you can certainly make a good start with simplifying, automating and generally making it easier and a better experience for your customer users.”
“In essence there is a grand vision, shared by many, of a human-centric, enriched, better, friction-free online world. But it is also a business agenda, supported and delivered by smart technology, enhanced by technology, but the objectives are above the digital.”

At the same time, the business transformation is digital. “Digital transformation is also not steady state, in fact by its nature it will always be dynamic and evolving. That’s where we see our MetaArc digital business platform, just launched in these islands,” Coy says. “You could call it a meta architecture or a brokerage service or system integrator for cloud, that also combines your on-premises core systems with multiple cloud services as a unified hybrid IT solution. The point is that digital transformation in any organisation will need to be able to use and combine any available technology or platform.”
