Aircraft maintenance firm Shannon Aerospace has spent €1m to upgrade its IT infrastructure and provide rapid online access to a large database of relevant information for its employees.

The deal will see the West of Ireland company install PowerEdge servers and a Dell/EMC Storage Area Network. The systems acquired will be used for data storage and the provision of e-mail, aircraft manuals and variety of databases.

A key element of the contract is the provision of immediate online access to a large database of aircraft manuals, aircraft parts and logistical information. The contract also includes Dell’s support services with 4hr response times and an assigned technical account management team.

Shannon Aerospace, which employs over 850 people, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik AG, and was founded in 1990 by Lufthansa, Swissair and Guinness Peat Aviation. It provides maintenance repair and overhaul for narrow-bodied aircraft.
‘We needed to invest in critical IT infrastructure to allow consolidation of data into a more manageable environment,’ said Patricia Kelly, data centre manager at Shannon Aerospace. ‘Dell was able to provide exactly what we needed with the right level of support and at an affordable price. We look forward to establishing
this relationship and view Dell as a trusted enterprise partner.’

Shannon Aerospace’s full storage system will consist of the Dell/EMC CX400 enterprise-class SAN with a full back-up system, clustered Dell PowerEdge servers running Microsoft Windows Server 2000, Exchange 2003, Office 2003 and Commvault Galaxy for Centralised Backup and Recovery. In addition to the hardware, Dell is designing and implementing the Microsoft architecture based on Windows Server 2003, and will deliver and install new PCs to every individual workstation.
