Businesses have been warned to be more vigilant about destroying data on hard drives before submitting hardware to be recycled. A recent study from the UK’s Information Commissioner’s office showed that 48% of a sample of 200 second hand hard drives still contained information with 11% containing information classified as sensitive.
Dublin-based environmental services company, Kavanagh Environmental Ltd, has extended its destruction service to ensure that all data is properly removed. The partnership between Kavanagh and UK company Tebernus allows clients to be assured of the correct removal of all data from their devices before they are recycled.
The EU is currently proposing punitive fines of 2% of a company’s global annual turnover for breaches of European data laws.
