ChatGPT enjoys comfortable lead over AI competitors in Ireland
ChatGPT is Ireland’s favourite AI chatbot according to data released by Web analytics company Statcounter.
The data, based on the number of referrals from individual AI chatbots to websites, show ChatGPT is by far the most popular option at 83.9%, followed by Microsoft Copilot (7.75%); Preplexity (5.28%); Google’s Gemini (2.31%); Claude (0.6%); and DeepSeek (0.14%).
Grok – owned by Elon Musk’s xAI and embedded into social network X – could not be included for technical reasons.
“With the massive growth in AI chatbot usage, it is crucially important for website owners and marketers to know which chatbots are sending the most referrals to websites,” said Statcounter founder and CEO Aodhan Cullen. “We are already moving into a new era from SEO (search engine optimisation) to generative engine optimisation (GEO).
“Google now finds itself in the same dilemma as traditional on-premise software providers at the birth of cloud computing. Its cash cow, Search, is at risk from new AI technology, which ironically, it helped to create.”
He added that reports of Apple adding AI to its Safari browser underscored the challenge ahead of Google.
At an international level, Statcounter confirmed ChatGPT’s dominance in G20 countries (79.8%) except China where DeepSeek had a comfortable lead (89.3%).
Cullen added: “AI is the big investment play by the tech industry. This new free service means that analysts, digital marketers and media can get an insight into how the AI landscape is evolving.”
Statcounter’s data is updated daily by country and region and is free to access.
