HP notebook PCs powered by the first 2Ghz Pentium 4 Mobile processors are now available to buy. The first of these, the HP Pavilion Ze 5170 (price TBA), offers a large 15-in screen, a DVD/CD RW drive and includes a built-in network card for office wired and wireless networking. The Compaq equivalent is the Presario 1505EA and it also offers a 15-in screen for comfortable viewing, 256Mbyte of memory as standard, 16MByte of video memory and the DVD/CD RW combo. It retails for €2,699.

Laptops sporting this speedy new mobile processor promise to deliver improved performance that will allow business managers who work remotely and have little use for a desktop PC. These machines further enable fast access to key business information due to their speedy boot times. They also promises a powerful multi-tasking environment that will allow the user to run word processing, Internet and e-mail applications and power hungry applications like spreadsheets, graphic viewers, Internet conferencing and CAD applications simultaneously.

Intel has also done a good job of reducing heat and increasing battery life with its Pentium 4-M 2Ghz chip, but the chips still gobble up an average of two watts in terms of power consumption. This makes the chips more suitable for full-sized laptops and two-spindle mobile systems, so it’s best to stick to a Pentium III mobile processor if you want a business laptop that’s ultralight and ultraportable.
