Irish domain registrar and hosting company Blacknight has released a statement saying it suffered a security breach on 31 January. Labelling the damage "minimal" the company said no financial data was compromised but e-mail addresses and telephone numbers may have been taken. Up to 40,000 customers may have been affected.

Blacknight has contacted Dataprotection.ie, Iriss.ie and has said it will be in contact with Gardai to investigate the matter further.

Michele Neylon of Blacknight said: "We take our responsibilities to our customers very seriously and have already been in touch with the data protection commissioner… Blacknight is a secure company, however data breaches are a reality that almost every online company must face. We are taking this opportunity to increase our security even further and apologise to our customers for any inconvenience this may cause."

Blacknight has recommended users update their Blacknight.com passwords and be on the look-out for suspicious activity on their accounts.
