Interim results from a survey conducted by BitcoinsInIreland.com, an independent bitcoin publication, have shone a light on users of the volatile cryptocurrency.

Launched in mid-March, the three-month open research project has received 150 responses from users in 51 countries and aims to have 1,000 responses when the entry window closes on 31 May.

Respondents to date are generally males aged between 20 and 50. Over half (51%) classed themselves as regular bitcoin users, with 22% using it the day they did the survey and a further 27% the week before.

Almost all respondents (99%) said they used a bitcoin wallet with 30% saying they used a desktop-based version, 26% using a mobile wallet, 15% using paper wallets and 13% using Bitcoin Core.

On exchanges, most respondents (80%) said they were registered with one, a quarter using them to buy bitcoin to spend on themselves. Over a quarter said they had lost bitcoin due to an exchange going out of business or being hacked.

Gambling was shown to be a common pasttime with respondents. A total of 51% of respondents said they gambled using bitcoin, dice rolling websites being the most popular.

On bitcoin mining, 37% identified themselves as miners. When asked how often they have purchased mining hardware, 31% responded ‘once, and it’s not in use’, and a further 31% said ‘several times’.
