IT outsourcing specialist PFH Technology Group has won a €338,000 contract to provide server room infrastructural equipment and associated services to Ireland’s Marine Institute, the national agency responsible for marine research, technology development and innovation.

The project effectively means a second data centre will be commissioned to house ICT equipment needed to implement programmes such as Sea Change, which aims to measure the effects of climate change on the marine environment.

The Institute’s IT systems and operations manager, Keith Manson, said the organisation
needed a high performance computing environment to run sophisticated climate models of the ocean and atmosphere. He added: “PFH has provided the best proposal, and their IT expertise and on-going partnership with us were key drivers in our decision-making.”

Manson said the Institute had also worked closely with PFH to maximise the efficiency of proposed water-cooled air-conditioners. These will vent returning hot water for use throughout the building. He said this was both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

PFH business development manager Paul Silke said winning the MI contract showed that his firm’s policy of staying close to its core capabilities – providing effective ICT infrastructure – had paid off.

The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
