Speaking to a keynote audience in New York City at its AWS Cloud Summit, Werner Vogels, chief technology officer and vice president of Amazon.com, said enterprises are beginning to look to the cloud not only to free up their IT staffs but to bring agility and stability to their businesses.
“By now we really know what all the benefits are of the cloud, and most of the benefits are on the business side of things,” Vogels said. “IT needs to make sure that its money is spent well and really put on specific purposes. If they take it off premise and put it to the cloud, they can do that.”
He added that last year AWS, which is a major cloud competitor with Google, Microsoft and IBM, launched more than 500 new major features and services.
This year, Vogels plans on topping that number and he got a solid start when the company made several announcements:
- AWS Device Farm, a new service designed to help mobile app developers test their apps on smart phones, tablets, and other devices quickly and easily;
- Amazon API Gateway, a fully managed service aimed at making it easier for customers to create, publish, maintain and monitor small and large APIs (application program interfaces);
- CodeCommit, a managed code editing service, is generally available. It had originally been announced last November;
- And CodePipeline, which is designed to help developers automate their software release processes. It was originally announced last fall but is available starting today.
“You have to be able to move fast,” Vogels said during his keynote. “Getting a new server shouldn’t take months. Moving fast is absolutely part of agility. You also need a wide variety of services available to help you match resources to your workload… This whole set of services allows you to really target the workload you want to build.”
