Apple WWDC report: MacBook Pro family extended

Life

10 June 2009

Apple has announced yesterday that they have updated their MacBook Pro line to include 13″, 15″, and 17″ models. Maintaining the aluminium unibody design, each MacBook will feature 40% longer battery life. Apple touts the redesign as an environmental and cost-effective choice.

The extended battery life promises approximately 1,000 recharges before the seven hours of wireless and adapter-free capability drops to 80% of the original capacity. This is three times the lifespan of a conventional battery. Apple hopes that this will promote less waste by reducing the need to constantly recharge and replace depleted batteries.

The 13″ MacBook Pro comes in two models. They both feature the seven-hour battery life, an SD card slot for uploading digital pictures, a FireWire 800 port for faster data transfer, an illuminated keyboard, an LED-backlit glossy screen with stronger colour, and an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card. The cheapest of the new MacBook Pros is the 160Gb hard drive, 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM 13″ model, running at a retail price of €1,149. The second model runs for €1,449 but features 250Gb hard drive, 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and 4Gb RAM.

The 15″ MacBook Pro comes in three different models, with the same features as the 13″ but greater processing. The first model starts off with 250Gb hard drive and 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, priced at €1,649. The second holds 320Gb hard drive with a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor for €1,849. The third 15″ model has a 500Gb hard drive and 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system, for €2,149. The last two models also feature both NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT graphics cards. Each model is €150 cheaper than the previous line of 15″ notebooks.

Finally, the 17″ MacBook Pro comes with an eight-hour battery life, an ExpressCard slot, LED-backlit screen, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT, 500Gb hard drive, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and 4Gb RAM. It retails for €2,299, €200 less than its predecessor.

For the first time, each MacBook Pro’s RAM and hard drive can be upgraded.

MacBook Air also received a retreatment, spanning two models. At 0.16-0.76″ thin, it can boast either a 120Gb hard drive or 128Gb solid state drive and up to 2.31GHz processor. Pricing starts at €1,449.
