Apple updates its browsing practices to comply with Digital Markets Act
The European Commission is about to complete an investigation into Apple’ s browser and search engine options on iOS devices. Apple has reportedly successfully brought its practices into compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This legislation seeks to empower users by simplifying their ability to switch between browsers, social media platforms and other online services.
The DMA also aims to promote competition by giving smaller rivals a fairer playing field. Failure to comply with the DMA can result in significant fines for tech giants like Apple, which can amount to 10 percent of their annual revenues for first-time violations and up to 20 percent for repeated violations. While Apple may escape fines in this particular case, the company is still being scrutinized by EU regulators.
Another investigation is ongoing that focuses on whether Apple’s policies restrict app developers from informing users about alternative payment options outside the App Store.
Separately, Meta is also expected to be fined more than $1 billion by the EU for alleged violations related to its “consent or pay” ad-free subscription model in the region.
