Microsoft Small Business Server is entry level server software designed for small companies looking to network their PCs, collaborate, and share information efficiently and cost-effectively.
Companies with 25 to 30 employees are ideally positioned to adopt the Small Business Server platform and its biggest selling point is that the platform can be managed by a ‘non-IP person’ i.e. a company employee who isn’t trained as a professional network administrator.
The package includes Windows 2000 Server edition for network operation, Exchange Server 2000 and Outlook 2000 for internal and external e-mail; Sequel Server 2000 for database building and collaboration; a firewall for network security and support for fax and modem so that an office Internet connection – ISDN or ADSL – can be shared among the employees.
Companies need to buy a licence for the server software and can then buy client licences in batches of five, where only five machines can be connected to the network at any one time but there can be multiple users on each PC. A batch of five licences typically costs €278 while a standard five user installation would cost a small company about €1452 according to Mike Hughes, server product marketing manager for Microsoft.
