Intel’s next generation of Thunderbolt, originally revealed at the National Association of Broadcasters conference in April under the codename Falcon Ridge, officially named Thunderbolt 2.
Intel said in a blog post that Thunderbolt 2 doubles the bandwidth over the original Thunderbolt, and will enable 4K video file transfer and display simultaneously. "It is achieved by combining the two previously independent 10Gb/s channels into one 20Gb/s bi-directional channel that supports data and/or display," explained the company.
"By combining 20Gb/s bandwidth with DisplayPort 1.2 support, Thunderbolt 2 creates an entirely new way of thinking about 4K workflows, specifically the ability to support raw 4K video transfer and data delivery currently," said Intel’s marketing director for Thunderbolt, Jason Ziller.
Thunderbolt 2 is backwards compatible with current cables and connectors, and is set to make its way into products by the end of 2013 ahead of a 2014 ramp up.
Thunderbolt, which is faster than rival USB 3.0’s 5Gb/s, was introduced by Intel and Apple in early 2011 and can be found in the majority of Apple’s current Mac products.
