With Sony cutting its PC and TV business it’s no surprise that other product lines are to be shed and it appears that the electronics giant’s e-reader line is next after it announced the closure of its Reader e-book store in North America and Canada.
From 20 March, Sony e-reader owners and app users in the US and Canada will no longer have access to the Reader Store. Features like newspaper subscriptions, wishlists and notations will not be transferred.
It’s not all bad news. Sony’s e-readers are known for their versatility and owners will be automatically migrated to Kobo’s more substantial offering. Downloaded titles will still sync with new Kobo accounts, so the transition process will largely go unnoticed.
Sony has a Reader Store in the UK but not in Ireland where its products were promoted in Easons – who have their own e-book store.
With the store being shut and Sony looking to cut 5,000 jobs worldwide it’s fair to say e-readers are unlikely to survive into 2015.
As for the e-ink technology behind Sony’s readers, it made an appearance in a new line of smart watches due for release later this year.
