Broadcaster tries its hand at modern content creation

The BBC is taking the unexpected decision to launch a series of productions first released on YouTube.

Officially, no details of the deal with the Google subsidiary have yet been disclosed, but the Financial Times managed to report the agreement to this end late last week under confirmation from those involved .

A prominent reason for this decision is simple: money. The BBC makes more money from its productions if they are not broadcast only in the UK.

It is not unlikely that the broadcaster will receive a fixed fee and a variable component based on advertising revenue earned. That revenue goes directly into the bank account of the BBC, which is dependent on viewing and listening fees in its home market.

After the new productions appear on YouTube, the broadcaster also publishes them on iPlayer and Sounds. Those are Britain’s NPO Start and NPO Listen.

According to the FT, the collaboration will be officially announced during this week.
