A report from the UN’s International Labor Organisation (ILO) in collaboration with Poland’s National Research Institute (NASK) has found that 25% of jobs worldwide are potentially at risk from generative artificial intelligence, however transformation, not replacement, is the most likely outcome.

The study titled Generative AI and Jobs: A refined global index of occupational exposure, gave detailed global assessment to date of how generative AI could reshape the world of work. The index – constructed by an analysis of 30,000 occupational tasks with expert validation, AI-assisted scoring, and data from the ILO – provided a unique snapshot of how AI could transform occupations and employment across countries.

The study found that 9.6% of jobs traditionally held by women, such as clerical and secretarial work, are likely to undergo substantial changes as a result of AI, compared to only 3.5% of jobs typically held by men such as manual labour and trades.

Moreover, the report highlighted that fields such as media, software development and finance are also experiencing significant shifts driven by advances in generative AI. While complete automation of entire professions is not imminent, the report highlighted the potential of AI to automate a large portion of the tasks within these functions.

“We went beyond theory to build a tool grounded in real-world jobs. By combining human insight, expert review, and generative AI models, we’ve created a replicable method that helps countries assess risk and respond with precision,” said Pawel Gmyrek, ILO senior researcher and lead author of the study.

To mitigate the potential negative effects of this transformation, the report urged governments, employers and labour organisations to work together on strategies that harness the power of AI to increase productivity and improve job quality.
