Enterasys‘ Matrix N7 and Matrix N3 switches offer distributed switching with high-availability and network-management capabilities.

The Matrix N-Series switches can support multimedia video broadcast and voice-over-IP applications. They can scale up to provide1.68Tbit/s of aggregate switching capacity with no single points of failure.

The switches can be equipped with three Distributed Forwarding Engine (DFE) modules for the Matrix N3, or seven DFEs for the Matrix N7; performance and capacity scales proportionately. DFE modules are compatible with the existing Matrix E7 switching platform.

DFEs use Enterasys’ family of nTERA ASICs to combine multilayer packet classification, switching/VLAN services, IP routing, security and management into a single module.

The role-based multilayer packet classification ability of Enterasys’ DFEs enables bandwidth to be managed to ensure the delivery of high-priority applications. In addition, extensive Layer 2-4 packet classification gives the DFEs the ability to look further into the packet, providing for better classification capabilities, and then make access control or class-of-service decisions.
