Co-founder and CEO of YouTube Chad Hurley has revealed that three years after its acquisition the video sharing website now hosts over 1 billion page views per day.

Writing in a blog post to be published later today, Hurley expressed his satisfaction with the growth of the service. “Three years ago today, [co-founder] Steve [Chen] and I stood out in front of our offices and jokingly crowned ourselves the burger kings of media…I’m proud to say that we have been serving well over a billion views a day on YouTube. This is great moment in our short history.”

Since its inception in February 2005 youTube has become a hub of user-generated content. Working under the tagline ‘broadcast yourself’ the site has grown to a rate where over 65,000 videos are being uploaded a day, with content ranging from home videos to copyright broadcast material to entire movies streamed as part of its ‘partner’ programme.

YouTube was bought by Google in February 2007 for $1.6 billion.

Hurley’s post reiterated his commitment to the principles of providing a fast service based on user-submitted content open to all. “We’ve brought more shows and movies to the site. There are now more ways than ever to make and consume content, and more of you are looking to turn your hobby into a real business.
