X pays €120m fine to Europe over Digital Services Act violation
Elon Musk-owned social media platform X has paid the €120 million fine imposed by the European Union in December, a spokesman for the European Commission has confirmed. X also proposed measures regarding the design of blue checkmarks for verified accounts.
Although X took legal action against the decision, the company complied with one of two options: pay the fine or provide a financial guarantee to secure payment should the appeal be rejected.
The EU imposed the fine in December, citing X’s violation of the Digital Services Act, particularly regarding blue tick design and transparency obligations. Musk and US Republicans criticised the fine when it was announced as an atack on free speech.
In addition to addressing the blue tick issue, X submitted a proposal on 10 March to address concerns regarding advertising and data transparency. The European Commission will assess this proposal to determine whether it sufficiently addresses its concerns.
Failure to implement the proposed measures could lead to further sanctions for the platform. X has until 28 April to submit solutions for these remaining breaches.
