Cable & Wireless has signed a EUR125 million five-year deal with Tesco to set up a new next generation telecomms network for the supermarket chain’s British and international operations. The deal means C&W will be the exclusive supplier of data, fixed and mobile communications to Tesco UK. C&W beat 14 competing tenders for the high-value contract.
The deal sees C&W migrating the retailer’s existing systems onto a single IP network linking all Tesco’s 1,800 sites, including distribution centres, regional offices and stores, giving Tesco 40 times the capacity of its current network.
The contract also covers the roll out a fixed mobile convergence system enabling Tesco staff to use their existing mobiles as fixed-line phones while in the office then switching to roam on a mobile network when outside the office.
As part of the deal, Cisco Systems will provide Tesco with its Telepresence conferencing technology with its advanced features that include remote document sharing and interactive whiteboard facilities.
