Windows 11 is getting a significant update infusion of artificial intelligence, with a revamped Start menu and enhanced Copilot+ integrations designed to increase user productivity and accessibility.

These updates are being rolled out initially for Snapdragon X-powered Copilot+ PCs such as the latest Surface devices, but will later be extended to other hardware configurations.

The redesigned Windows 11 Start menu features a full-screen ‘all apps’ view categorised for easier navigation. It also includes the long-awaited Phone Link companion panel, which gives real-time access to recent messages, calls, battery status and contacts from connected Android or iOS devices.

An innovative AI agent integrated into the Windows Settings app simplifies troubleshooting by allowing users to describe problems in natural language. This agent then guides them to the appropriate settings and, with the user’s permission, can even automate changes. Microsoft stresses that although the recommendations are generated by AI, they are not always accurate and urges caution when applying these suggestions to sensitive settings.

The ‘click to do’ feature, powered by neural processing units on the device, also gets more functionality. Users can now use Copilot to analyse on-screen text or images, draft content in Microsoft Word, convert on-screen information into Excel tables, schedule Teams meetings or messages, and launch Reading Coach or Immersive Reader – all designed to streamline repetitive tasks through contextual awareness.
