UPC raises curtain for On Demand

Telecoms provider UPC is to introduce its own on-demand service for Ireland.

Going live on 25 May, UPC On Demand offers seven-day catch-up TV from the RTÉ Player and 3player (TG4 to be added in the coming weeks) and over 1,300 hours of back catalogue TV titles for free. A movies on-demand service will also be available.

Over one third of homes in Dublin will get On Demand added automatically to their current UPC TV service ahead of a national roll-out this summer to reach over 600,000 homes.

The movie rental service will give customers access to hundreds of movies on a rental basis similar to iTunes, with same day release promised for selecte titles as they hit DVD. All customers will be able to rent the latest movie releases (€4.99SD or €5.99HD) and will also be able to choose from an extensive movie library (€1.99SD or €2.49HD).

Dana Strong, chief executive, UPC Ireland, said: "UPC On-Demand TV redefines television as we know it in Ireland and gives us a unique TV offering. UPC customers can now watch what they want, when they want, without the constraints of a TV schedule or DVR. It’s the only true On-Demand TV service in Ireland which means you’ll always be able to find something you enjoy… On Demand TV is our first step in changing how Irish households watch television."

Unlike Internet-based television and movie services, UPC On-Demand TV uses the On-Demand button on aUPC digital remote control to provide access to a library of current and recent TV and movies.
