The provider saw off competition from IBM and Compaq to run the university’s Web-enabled course management system, which will serve more than 1,500 faculty members and handle the enrolment of some 21,000 students.

As part of the programme, users will have peronalised online access to course material, learning resources such as library systems, academic and student support schemes. The first phase of UU’s distance learning programme is being run on a Sun Enterprise 220 server and StorEdge A1000 that offers 436Gbyte of scalable storage space.

The system is being implemented by Horizon Open Systems, which is Sun’s Irish country partner, and a Sun Academic Business Centre in Northern Ireland.
