UCD staff adopt Google Apps for Education

UCD has completed the transition of UCD staff mail to Google. This involved supporting approximately 6,000 staff through a migration of over 65 million e-mails. This follows the successful migration of the student body’s mail service to Google Apps for Education in 2011.

The advertisement-free service incurs no cost to the University and will save money which would otherwise be spent on the provisioning and maintenance of the e-mail infrastructure. SaaS (software-as-a-service) is being widely used by businesses and universities around the world as they look to provide improved cost-effective solutions. Google Apps for Education includes Gmail for e-mail access, Google Calendar for scheduling and Google Drive for creating and editing collaborative documents, spreadsheets and presentations, as well as file sharing and storage.

Brian Morrissey, head of Web services, UCD, said: "With over 30,000 smartphone and tablet devices on the UCD network, ease of access via mobiles to Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive is an important factor in this transition. Additionally, Google’s continuous innovation process brings service improvements without impacting service availability. The rollout of the service took five months from January of this year with dedicated support offered to University staff throughout."
