From 7 to 11 March, industry and academia are joining forces to showcase careers in the tech sector to transition year students with aspirations towards careers in science and engineering.
Tyndall National Institute and Cork Electronics Industry Association (CEIA) are playing host to a group of 20 students participating in this unique Transition Year Work Experience programme.
The students, from eight schools across Cork city and county, will spend the week between Tyndall, UCC, CIT and 10 engineering companies.
With support from the Department of Electronic Engineering, CIT and the Department of Electrical Engineering, UCC and world-class companies such as EMC, Moog, ON Semiconductor, Horner, S3, M/A-Com Technology Solutions and Flextronics, the transition year students will experience a week that is designed to be a comprehensive insight into all aspects of research and engineering careers.
Companies from both industry groups CEIA and MIDAS (Microelectronic Industry Design Association) are opening their doors to students for an on-site placement day as part of the programme.
Throughout the week, researchers and engineers from the institutes and companies will bring physics and electronics to life for the students by showing them how basic principles can be applied to all areas of life.
Students will investigate the materials, components and systems that form the basis of much of the technology on which they rely so heavily in their everyday lives such as mobile phones, computers, iPods, and the Internet.
Participants will also be taking part in a competition to find the most innovative idea based on the projects and information they will be exposed to over the course of the week. They will present their ideas for judging on 11 March 11th and each member of the winning team will receive a Flip Mini Video Camcorder.
In response to the large number of applications to the programme, Tyndall and CEIA are hosting a second TY Work Experience Week later this month, from 28 March to 1 April.
