Some trends are just embarrassing. Flares, legwarmers, Fianna Fail economic policy, looking back it’s a mystery how we survived such faddish nonsense. Seriously, there are times when the masses needs saving from itself. No more so was this apparent that the trending topics on Twitter this morning. Joined by the now reliable staples of the Iran election, Michael Jackson and global warming, top of the list, was Rick Astley.
Personally I thought Rickrolling was more over than Wham bars and Air Supply, repatriated to the 1980s – ‘the decade that would never end’ -, a quirky footnote in the Web’s knack for creating an forgetting heroes in the click of a mouse. Not so.
This morning the hot news on Twitter was Astley’s untimely death by cardiac arrest in a Berlin hotel. Only he wasn’t dead. In fact he still isn’t. Fit and happy in his 40s, Astley has once again been victim to another fabricated report of his demise that went viral. A quick bout Googling confirmed the reports as the kind of mischief making that returned him to prominence in the first place.
