A group of Trinity Students have won the 2013 Deloitte Top Technology Talent Competition for their idea for an app which lets people upload an event into their diary and provides an option to share the event details instantly with their friends’ calendars.
The three students, Samuel Albanie, Pablo Porto Veloso and Florian Rhinow, all of whom are studying for an MSc in Networks and Distributed Systems, presented Snapit! as a business solution for tourism and nightlife businesses.
The students recognised these sectors regularly promote events through poster marketing campaigns and developed the idea for Snapit!, which takes a photo of the poster and then translates that image into a calendar entry on the person’s phone, which could then be shared with their friends.
To carry out this translation the team propose utilising data gathering technologies such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Quick Response (QR) codes. The app itself would be built on open source web technologies including Django, HTML5, jQuery and PhoneGap and deployed across Amazon’s cloud platform.
The winning students now have a choice of either a €1,000 prize or four weeks’ paid work experience in Deloitte’s technology integration practice.
Commenting on his group’s win, team member Florian Rhinow said: "The team regularly meet on campus to brainstorm new ideas as we are all interested in the start-up industry and love to build applications that have an impact. By progressing through the competition, we have received really great feedback and useful advice, and this has given us confidence to progress our idea. Over the coming weeks, we want to code a prototype of Snap-it! and see how people react to it."
