HP has launched a notebook tracking and recovery service aimed at ameliorating the problem of computer theft – which increasingly leads to data compromise and identity theft.
The service can track and recover stolen laptops by using pre-installed software. It can also be used to permanently delete data remotely, detect unauthorised software or missing hardware and help ensure regulatory compliance.
The service is designed for customers with remote and mobile users, and can be managed centrally by IT departments.
HP users simply register their notebook PCs to activate the pre-installed software and their account. The computer then reports its location to a confidential monitoring centre when it connects to the internet, enabling HP’s service to see its location.
A recovery team would then work with police to recover the stolen hardware.
HP’s Charl Snyman notes that “for the monthly cost of a cup of coffee”, organisations effectively get their own IT security team.”
The service is available from EUR*36 annually through HP’s direct sales force and HP Preferred Partners.
