Tourist board welcomes IT upgrade

1 April 2005

Bord Fáilte has completed an upgrade of its IT hardware, software and network infrastructure in 12 offices around the world.

The project was jointly managed from Dublin by Bord Fáilte and the IT service provider, Cara. A team from Cara carried out site and cabling specification audits, equipment configuration, shipment, installation, systems and data transfers and training.

‘The project was very successful despite the geographical and logistic difficulties involved and the very tight deadlines,’ commented Emmet Wilson, head of IT with Bord Fáilte. ‘Detailed planning ensured minimal business disruption.’

In some sites, staff were moving from an Apple Mac-based operating system to Windows 2000. Before they returned to Dublin, the Cara staff provided on-site skills training for Bord Fáilte staff on a one-to-one basis once the new systems were in place.

Some work was carried out after hours or over weekends in order to minimise business disruption. The implementation involved the installation of over 200 Compaq DeskPros, Compaq Proliant ML530 Servers, laptops and printers.

Work was carried out at the Bord Fáilte offices in Dublin and Belfast and at the 10 offices now being operated by Tourism Ireland Ltd. in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, Milan, Madrid, and New York.
