Panasonic has launched new editions to its Toughbook range. The CF-W4 and CF-T4 are capable of resisting weight of up to 100kg.
A robust magnesium casing keeps weight low while providing structural strength that protects the more vulnerable components of laptops, such as LCD screens. A flexible mount for the screen allows it to flex safely when forces are applied. The motherboard too boasts a “floating” construction that allows it to yieled under certain forces to protect it.
Despite their resilience, the new Toughbooks weigh only 1290g (CF-W4) and 1510g (CF-T4), including battery. The minimal weight makes them suitable companions for sales people, business travellers and frequent flyers, who have to cut down baggage volume and weight but still need reliable protection for their notebook. As semi-ruggedised Toughbooks, the CF-W4 and CF-T4 can survive falls from a height of 30 cm unharmed.
An Intel Pentium M processor 753 with a 1.2 gigahertz clock speed provides the basis for performance. Energy-saving ultra low voltage (ULV) technology and high-performance Panasonic batteries ensure a significantly increased battery life; the CF-T4 is operable for up to 12 hours without interruption, the CF-W4 up to 7.5 hours, on the basis of “Battery Mark 4.01” (minimum screen brightness). The reflection-free Active Matrix TFT colour screen is also brighter than on previous models. The CF-W4’s screen boasts up to 240 cd. This is not achieved by intensifying the LCD backlight – draining valuable energy – but on the basis of a diffusing sheet that distributes light efficiently and evenly.
Intel Centrino mobile technology, supporting all normal WLAN IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards, enables wireless data transfer rates of up to 54 megabit/s. A new feature means the WLAN function can be turned on and off simply using a switch on the hardware side. Both Toughbooks feature the Sonoma-generation Centrino platform and the Alviso 915GMS chip set, designed especially for notebooks. The standard versions have a 512Mb RAM user memory – extendable up to 1024Mb – and a 40Gb hard drive, which can be changed quickly and easily by unscrewing the casing.
