Total Exports increase by 8% in 2010
The CSO has released statistics detailing that the total value of exports in 2010 was €162.7 billion, representing an 8% growth from 2009. Overall exports generated a trade surplus of €35.4 billion, indicating a 6% rise in merchandise exports. Exports initially fell in the first five months of 2010 but then bounced back towards the end of the year. The services trade data figures were published last week which showed that service based exports increased in 2010 by 10% to €73.3 billion and are steadily growing as a proportion of our total costs.
Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton welcomed the latest figures and stated that “these services exports reflect the growth of our knowledge based sectors, with computer services accounting for over one third of such exports and growing very strongly. In addition insurance and financial services are very significant elements in the services sector.”
