Toshiba has announced its officialy application for membership of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).
A statement released by the company cited “recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike” as the rationale for finally throwing in behind Sony’s high definition format.
Toshiba also said it would introduce digital products that support the Blu-ray format, including players and notebook PCs later this year.
Toshiba lost the high defition format war in early 2008 when film studios struck agreements with Sony to exclusively support Blu-ray over their HD DVD. With no content to promote the format Toshiba canned HD DVD in January 2008.
