Top Security grows new IT arm

Security firm Top Security has invested €2m in setting up a cyber-security arm, Topsec Technology.  The investment will go towards building a 24/7 Secure Operations Centre and provide computer security infrastructure services to clients.

Topsec Technology will provide a number of cyber-security services, including 24-hour remote monitoring of critical network devices and servers, as well as e-mail content and Internet usage.
Top Security is the latest security firm specialising in physical security to move into the IT space. Last August, networking security firm IT Partners announced that it was merging with the Omada Fire & Security Group to become the IT security division of Omada.

However, Top Security has taken the organic approach towards developing its IT division rather than opting for an acquisition, said Topsec Technology’s general manager, Brian Honan.  The company has been in gestation for the past two years, during which it has spent time developing its procedures and processes and establishing a product portfolio.

Speaking to Channels, Honan said there are an increasing number of companies offering elements of IT security and network management services, but Topsec integrates security and network services to provide 24-hour monitoring of security breaches and system failures at its purpose built Operations Centre in the Citywest Business Campus.  The company currently employs nine staff.

‘The difference between us and other IT security firms is that we’re not selling software, we sell a service,’ said Honan, adding that the other difference was the establishment of Topsec represented a security company moving into the IT space, not an IT company moving in to the security arena.

‘Our services automate manual security tasks, protect the network perimeter, provide real-time alerts allowing security breaches and network failures to be identified and corrected before financial loss occurs. They help block attacks, rapidly identify new forms of security threats, identify potential network problems, detect infected attachments in e-mails and limit access to undesirable web-sites to reduce non-business activity and reduce bandwidth consumption.’

Topsec is using technology from vendors such as Intellitactics, Aprisma and Dirig.
