Tiny speakers bring big sound to laptops

Cubie-doobie-doo! Listening pleasure cubed!

While bigger laptops and advanced technology have overcome the drawbacks once associated with small screens, sound quality is another matter if you rely on built-in speakers.

Now Sandberg offers a set of tiny speakers designed to give laptops a bigger sound. To compare the quality of the Sandberg USB Cube Speaker Set, I slipped a CD into my laptop and spent a few minutes listening through its built-in Harmon-Kardon speakers.

Leaving the CD playing, I then plugged in the Sandberg speakers. The improvement far surpassed my expectations.

Set-up could not be simpler. There’s no software to install and no voltage converter, since the USB speakers draw their power from the PC.

A knob at the rear of one speaker doubles as volume control and on-off switch, with LEDs providing a blue glow to the speaker bases when they’re powered up. Another thoughtful touch is a headphone socket.

These speakers do not pretend to replace the big boxes of your living-room hi-fi set; but they’re light enough and compact enough to take with you on business trips, and they provide a vast improvement on a laptop’s in-built speakers.

Recommended retail price is €15.99 inc VAT. Cliff Hutton
