Meta’s microblogging platform Threads has reached a new milestone by surpassing 400 million monthly active users.

Threads was launched in the summer of 2023 and grew at breakneck speed, thanks primarily to its close ties with Instagram. Users can easily create a profile and share content across both platforms. Promotion via Facebook and other Meta channels also gave Threads a significant boost.

The focus on viral content and a user-friendly feed quickly cemented Threads’ place in the social media landscape.

While Threads continues to grow, its immediate competitor X is struggling. Since being taken over by Elon Musk, the platform has seen its user numbers drop. Musk’s controversial decisions, such as rolling back moderation policies, waging war against what he calls ‘woke culture,’ and his open support for right-wing voices, have driven many users away. A flirtation with conspiracy theories has only exacerbated this, opening the door for alternatives like Threads to step in.

Even Bluesky, another challenger to X, saw rapid initial growth but has since slowed down. Threads, by contrast, is still on the rise and is steadily climbing the ranks of the world’s most used social networks.
