ThirdForce, an e-learning courseware and testing provider, has won a contract from the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) to produce a new educational TV series to help adults to learn literacy and numeracy skills. The series, called The Really Useful Guide to Words and Numbers, will receive funding of  €1.5 million from the BCI.

In co-operation with the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA), ThirdForce will produce two series of 12 programmes to be aired weekly on Ireland’s RTE national television service from autumn 2006 and spring 2007.

The Really Useful Guide to Words and Numbers series will engage and help adults to learn in a flexible, interesting and entertaining way. Participants can learn at their own pace, privately and in the comfort of their own home. In addition to television, the initiative will include the provision of personal learning materials and support by NALA. It is targeted at a wide range of adults, including those already involved in an education programme.

ThirdForce has a specific division called EP Skills for Life which develops e-learning solutions addressing numeracy and literacy skills. This arm of the business was formed through the acquisition of AV Edge Ltd. in 2004, the producer of five successful Read Write Now TV series, which aired on RTE from 2000-2004.

ThirdForce Chief Executive Officer, Brendan O’Sullivan, commented: “This significant contract for ThirdForce reflects the success of the continuing diversification of our operations. We are confident this will make a significant contribution to society and the economy through the broad improvement of literacy, numeracy and ICT Skills.”

OECD surveys indicate very high levels (18% to 25%) of the population with literacy and numeracy needs in developed economies such as the UK, Ireland and Australia. ThirdForce is producing a suite of e-learning products to support government initiatives in addressing these challenges.
