Hyundai Motor and Kia’s DAL-e Delivery Robot

Kia together with Hyundai is presenting the latest version of the DAL-e Delivery. The advanced delivery robot is an improved version of the robot introduced in December 2022 and has been further developed to take autonomous delivery in complex environments, such as offices and shopping malls, to the next level.

Based on four Plug & Drive (PnD) modules, the DAL-e Delivery combines an electric motor with environmental recognition sensors and steering, suspension and braking systems. The robot can reach speeds of up to 1.2 m/s, combining the freely moving modules with autonomous driving technology to recognize obstacles and navigate easily in crowded environments.

To further improve driving stability, the DAL-e Delivery now has a square column design with rounded corners and a center of gravity at the bottom.

Lighting incorporated into the cargo area ensures easy entry and exit of items. When the door opens, the storage compartment automatically comes forward.

Another notable feature of the DAL-e Delivery is its autonomous driving ability to navigate to and from all floors of a building, where it can take into account elevators and any door control systems. It can further speed up its delivery service by determining optimal routes in real time.

When DAL-e Delivery arrives at its destination, it recognises the recipient via an installed camera. Using advanced AI face identification technology, co-developed by Kia’s Robotics Lab, the loading door opens automatically without the recipient having to enter a password.

The DAL-e Delivery is being deployed in practice for the first time by IGIS Asset Management in its new smart office building ‘Factorial Seongsu’ which is set to open in the second quarter of this year.

Apple is reportedly secretly working on robots for the home. According to Bloomberg, Cupertino is working on two models: a table-like device that uses robotics to rotate a display and a robot that you can follow around the house. In doing so, the company is entering a crowded market, as not the least companies are launching (home) robots.
