Teleconferencing in Ireland

Traffic congestion and an inadequate transport system are becoming a major obstacle to the success of small companies, especially in Dublin. Indeed a recent SFA “Speed of Business” survey showed that businesses in the capital are losing hundreds of millions annually because of time lost due to traffic congestion.

If you own or manage a small company in the Dublin area and face a challenge in getting all of your staff around a physical table in your head office, then you should look to technology to find an inexpensive workaround.

Take for example, the Teleconference product from Eircom. It allows you to use a standard telephone system to host a meeting between your on-site staff and remote sales staff. Customers can also be invited to “attend” a meeting without having to leave their premises either.

Currently, Eircom has 1500 registered users of the service and according to Maura O’Reilly, business marketing executive, Eircom, “Initial uptake has been strongest among distribution and sales teams in firms with personnel throughout the country”.

A good example is Retail Petroleum Solutions, a Dublin-based petrol distribution company: It relies on teleconferencing for weekly meetings between office-based staff and remote sales staff. Alan Byrne, RPS’ financial controller outlines the cost and time benefits: “Face-to-face weekly meetings are now virtually eliminated and the company (RPS) can make better use of its monthly in-person meetings since key issues are discussed by phone on a regular basis”.

Typically, teleconference meetings involve six to eight people, all in different locations in Ireland, and each participant need only have access to a land line or mobile phone.

Two types of teleconferencing services available:

  • Meet Me involves each participant dialling into the conference.
  • Operator Assisted involves an operator calling and inviting each participant to join the meeting.

To avail of teleconferencing, users need to register with Eircom by phone or through an Eircom account manager. Once registered, users can schedule whenever they need to by quoting a special pin number. Booking of conference meetings is done online at www.eircom.ie/teleconference or by calling a special freephone number 1800 411 711 (Ireland only).
