FIT (Fastrack to IT) has welcomed the Government’s commitment to employment preservation and generation, as announced as part of its jobs initiative.

The industry led body with board members from companies such as IBM, Microsoft and Siemens say that a skills gap still exists in certain parts of the economy, such as technology. It considers the various Government-supported internship schemes and training programmes that have been announced to be crucial to filling these gaps and building towards economic recovery.

Peter Davitt, CEO of FIT commented that, “despite perceptions to the contrary, there are jobs in Ireland in specific emerging areas. Employers are in touch with us every day indicating that they can’t recruit people with the skills needed to fill the vacancies – particularly in the areas of cloud computing, software testing, computer systems engineering, games development and mobile technologies. Davitt added that, “in a country that presently has over 430,000 people unemployed, it is a big concern that we are still very challenged to fill job vacancies in critical sectors like Information Technology and specifically in new emerging technologies.”

FIT has called on the government to work with organisations like themselves to help change the approach to education and training to ensure that courses and training is geared towards these sectors where gaps exist.
