Assistant director on Game of Thrones Tanya Rosen and entrepreneur Harry McCann, were among the speakers at the fourth Creative Tech Fest, held today at Google’s Foundry offices in Dublin.

Some 200 young people from youth clubs and schools across Ireland took part in workshops and activities in digital media, music, 3D Design. Young people exhibited their own work and tookpart in interactive workshops, witnessing inspirational speakers and live performances.

Creative Tech Fest is the annual celebration of TechSpace, an education movement that inspires young people aged 10-20 to become digital creators, inventors and makers through free access to hardware, software, trained youth workers and creative mentors. Creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and confidence are skills at the heart of TechSpace activities.

Hosted by the social enterprise Camara Ireland, TechSpaces have supported by organisations by YMCA, Ogras, Foroige and Youth Work Ireland. Young people gain experience on a variety of innovative technology projects, including soldering, robotics, film, photography, music and game design.

For the first time this year, TechSpace showcased projects in the Irish language with support from the Dept of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht affairs.

“TechSpace… channels young people’s native interests in technology into something that they can both engage and share with others,” said Jen Hesnan, TechSpace national coordinator. “By training educators in creative facilitation, any young person who comes through the door can find a purpose, becoming a creator and not just a consumer of technology.”

Ilse White, education programme manager, Google, said: “Enabling young people to be the creators, and not just the consumers, of technology is vital for giving them the skills they need to succeed in the future. Tech Fest is a great way to celebrate creativity in technology, share ideas and learn new skills.”
