Take your TV with you

Do you love TV and want to bring it with you wherever you go? Now you can, thanks to two products from Sony and Sling Devices.

The Slingbox is designed to connect to your TV or PC media centre and to your broadband connection so you can deliver the video content over the Internet to your Wi-Fi-enabled laptop in a hotspot. The software installed in the Slingbox is only designed to work with Windows PC, although the company says that it plans to release a Mac version in the coming months. Unfortunately, the Slingbox is not available from a local Irish retailer yet but it can purchased online from Slingmedia.com. It retails for a steep $250.

Sony’s Locationfree is a completely new way of seeing TV. Instead of going to the television set, the TV comes to you by redirecting your local TV shows to wherever you are even if you don’t have a TV with you. When you’re not at home, Locationfree makes sure what used to be called ‘home’ entertainment stays with you.

With Locationfree, you can watch live TV, play back recorded programmes and even set up future recordings, all from a PC, laptop or PSP. Built-in wireless technology gives you the freedom of your own home (and garden), and the Internet does the rest.

The heart of the system is the Locationfree Base Station. This compact unit has two connections for AV equipment such as a DVD/HDD recorder. The Base Station can be plugged directly into an existing home network or it can establish a wireless link to a PSP handheld gaming device, notebook or desktop PC, typically over a 100-foot range.
