System administrators hold second AGM

To mark two years in existence, the System Administrators Guild of Ireland (SAGE-IE) held its second AGM during July. One of the key topics for discussion was the group’s plan to introduce paid membership over the next few months.

SAGE-IE intends to start charging an annual fee of €50 for professional and EUR*20 for student membership from October 1st 2004. The group will also be introducing corporate membership and a special membership rate for student societies.

Feedback at the AGM indicated that members are generally happy with the talks that have been held over the last couple of years in terms of speakers, technical content and the level at which they have been pitched. The group holds regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month and has already put together a schedule for the rest of the year. More details of future meetings, as well as slides and papers from those already held, are available at
www.sage-ie.org/meetings. Members were also satisfied with the work that SAGE is currently doing with the Department of Justice on traffic data retention.

The group’s president, Donal Cunningham, says that SAGE would like to hold more regional meetings over the coming year, but this will probably not happen before the end of 2004. ‘We’re also hoping to engage further with other groups, such as the Institute of Engineers in Ireland and the Irish Computer Society,’ he says. ‘We’ve already held one joint event with the IEI as part of their continuing professional development programme.’

The guild currently has approximately 250 members, but Cunningham believes that the group has the capacity to grow a lot bigger. ‘SAGE-IE is aimed at system administrators and network engineers, and really anyone who is involved in supporting, maintaining and
developing computer systems,’ he says.
