Murphy said the launch of the 10Mb service was “a major step towards putting Ireland into the frontline of digital economies”.

Managing director Tim Murphy claimed the company was the first to offer a unified broadband service to companies that would give them a single contract and a single bill in Euros for south and north. “We don’t see the south and north as separate markets,” he said.

Although primarily aimed at companies in the south with operations in the north, Murphy admitted Strencom would not necessarily “turn down someone ringing from Belfast”.BT has operations in the south and the north but they are separate businesses, he added.

In a busy month, Strencom has also introduced a 10Mb broadband service designed specifically for technology dependent SMEs.

Based on e|net’s fibre optic MAN infrastructure, Strencom claimed it was providing “the fastest broadband speed to the Irish SME market”.

Because the service is based on fibre it provides 10Mb up and down the link and the contention is ten to one.

“It’s ideal for companies with teleworkers,” Murphy suggested, “who are trying to VPN into the LAN.” With a normal broadband service, the upload speed would be significantly lower than the download, whereas remote workers on the 10Mb service would see very little difference between accessing via the fibre link and being on the LAN.

Murphy said the launch of the 10Mb service was “a major step towards putting Ireland into the frontline of digital economies”.  He claimed it had received an “exceptional” reaction from the Cork business community and we would expect to roll this out nationwide in the coming 12-18 months”.

Murphy accepted the service was not suitable for all SMEs.

“It’s for companies that are technology driven with high bandwidth usage,” he explained. “Perhaps they have video conferencing applications, a call centre or VoIP. That’s really where it’s pitched.”The service costs €795 a month.
