Stalker apps proliferate on Facebook

Security firm BitDefender has issued a warning about applications promising to gauge the number of visits each user profile gets. The warning was based on data collected by BitDefender’s safego, a tool designed to protect social network accounts from privacy risks, e-threats and spam.

At 34.7%, the top ranking bait is the ‘see who viewed your profile’ type and it lures users into finding out how many visitors their profiles have attracted.

“According to our statistics, stalker-like scams have collected approximately 1.5 millionclicks per wave. These figures help us find a possible explanation for the fact that these scams are increasingly cloned on other social platforms, such as Twitter,” stated George Petre, leader of BitDefender’s Threat Intelligence Team.
