Photographic retail chain Spectra Photo has installed an electronic point of sale (EPOS) system that links all of its 32 branches around the country to its Listowel head office.
Based on IBM Sureone Terminals and installed by specialist EPOS supplier Retail Solutions the new system allows every Spectra Photo outlet to have complete information about the level of stocks on its own premises, its central warehouse and at other outlets around the country. The information is updated daily from head office.
According to Spectra’s retail operations manager Tony O’Driscoll the new system replaces standalone tills that could only calculate total sales for a particular outlet at the end of each day. With the new integrated system, each outlet can get a transparent view of stock across the entire company.
‘Previously, if somebody was looking for a particular model of camera that I didn’t have in stock,’ he said, ‘I would have to phone around every other shop in the country to see if they had one. Now I can just do a search from my till. I call it a till but it’s essentially a fully functional PC in its own right.’
O’Driscoll said that the company had reviewed a number of systems from Irish, UK and US companies before choosing the Retail Solutions system. The software that runs on the SureOne terminals is called Retail Manager Plus. ‘It increases efficiencies in order processing and the accuracy and speed of the photographic development process, amounting to better service for our customers, said O’Driscoll.
In addition to the group-wide EPOS system, Spectra Photo also purchased Retail Solution’s Head Office Suite and Warehouse Distribution programme, which controls movement of stock from its warehouse to all branches.
