Core safety: The new Sophos program supports all Apple Mac hardware

IT security and data protection firm Sophos has unveiled a free Mac anti-virus product for home users.

Sophos says it provides automatic detection against existing and new threats for Mac OS X and that it can remove existing malware infections.

Although malware is more common on Windows than it is on Macs, there is a growing concern that, as Mac OS X market-share continues to grow, the operating system will become a more attractive target for cybercriminals.

Sophos product manager Chris Kraft notes: “While most businesses recognise the importance of protecting their Mac computers from malware threats, most home users do not.”

The security specialist has also launched a dedicated Mac support forum.

The antivirus product requires 256MB of memory and 150MB of disk space. It supports OSX 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snow Leopard). It supports all Apple Mac hardware.
