Sony has released a first in the technology world, a set of in-ear headphones with noise cancellation capability.

Previously, such technology was only available in bulky enclosure type devices, but in an announcement at the recent IFA consumer electronics show in Germany, the company showcased the small and light MDR-NC300D headphones.

Sony is claiming that the headphones boast an impressive 98.4% reduction in ambient noise automatically, with no need for user configuration.

Despite the noise caelling feautres, Sony says that there is no compromise on audio performance. The headphones feature a choice of three sound modes (Movie, Bass, Normal) that fine-tune frequency response to suit listening preferences, with a 16mm Neodymium driver for rich, smooth sound and powerful, extended bass.

The headphone’s vertical in-ear design is designed for maximum comfort during extended listening sessions. It’s supplied with 7 sizes of soft silicone ear bud for a perfect fit.

There is also a convenient monitor switch that switches off digital noise cancelling to allow ambient sounds through when required. A single AA battery provides power for up to 20 hours of uninterrupted listening.

Prices were not available at writing but availability is expected in October.
